Pole Dancing in the Past
According to some researchers, the first known evidence of pole dancing shows that teasing dances originate from Africa. The women danced in a way to describe how exactly they want their future husband to make love to them.
Another presumable origin of pole dancing comes from the 12th century. This dance was typically performed in May by pagan women who danced around a maypole. They believed the practice boosts fertility.
The tradition was common for all Germanic people of the Iron Age. Even today some people from parts of Europe and North America celebrate around a maypole. We should note that this is a typical pagan symbol and it shouldn’t be mistaken with Victorian era’s maypoles.
Another interesting and closely related dance to today’s pole dancing is the Indian Mallastambha. It was an ancient sport, in which men twisted and turned on an iron pole. Only the strongest and most agile men took part in it. They performed specific moves that showed their strength and dexterity.
For a long time pole dancing was forgotten and no one did it. Fortunately, it reappeared again during the Depression. Suddenly pole dancing was revived by circus actresses. They danced, twisted and jumped around the tent poles. Most of their moves were the same as the pole dancing moves we all know today. Sliding up and down, twisting and holding poses were so mesmerizing that pole dancing quickly became popular around the world.
Pole Dancing Today
Around the 1950’s the circus pole dancing evolved into the modern and familiar thing that we all call pole dancing today. Modern pole dancing quickly spread around the USA. The earliest recorded pole dance in the U.S was in Oregon in 1968 and was performed by Belle Jangles at Mugwumps strip joint.
When people started to show interest in this new and exciting entertainment, stripper clubs began to spread all over the states. Women who wanted to pole dance used different dresses, costumes, music and moves. For years and years they’ve experimented with different techniques and eventually they’ve improved the lovely art we all love to watch.
The first instructional video on pole dancing was released in the 1990s, by Fawnia Mondey. The video popularized the lovely erotic dance around the world even more. Now pole dancing is considered to be one of the most sensual performances in the strip clubs. The dance even evolved into a form of aerobic exercise and people petitioned for it to become a recognized sport and be added as one of the Olympic sports.
In conclusion, pole dancing was and still is one of the most seductive dances. It was popular in Africa, Europe and Asia long before media was even a thing. It is difficult, it is mesmerizing and it is hot, so we should respect the boys and girls who practice it. I don’t know about you, but I would choose a stripper from Chicago Exotic Strippers for my next party.
